Clementine... The Game!

When I’m not writing, I am often teaching. One of the classes I love to teach (surprise!) is children’s literature. In this class, my students and I get to read all sorts of cool kidlit books. We read a combination of brand new books and older classics. Our goal is to think and learn as much as we can about kidlit books: what makes them interesting, what makes them fun, what makes them hard.

Recently, I asked my students to figure out a way to “teach” a book. Some of you might be familiar with the marvelous adventures of Clementine by Sara Pennypacker. One of my students, Katelyn, designed a game to enhance the reading of the book. The game takes you through the major events in the book.

She made the game board and these adorable game pieces.

If you could turn a book into a game, what book would you choose? And what kind of game would you design?

(PS: If you haven’t read Clementine, it’s a treat! It’s one of my favorite books about how tough 3rd grade can be!).
