Dolphins? Right Here?

28 October 2014

I just spent the weekend in Cape May, NJ. As a kid, I used to play on Sunset Beach looking for Cape May diamonds, clear quartz stones polished by the ocean waves. I never thought a lot about what was under the water. So, imagine my surprise this weekend when I boarded a boat for a nature cruise only to discover that Cape May is home to many dolphins!

Although I often think about dolphins in warmer waters and more tropical locations, I learned that the waters around Cape May play host to Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins each summer and fall when female dolphins come to the area to give birth to their young. I was able to see more than 50 dolphins in pods, groups of mothers and their young swimming all along the coast.

Sometimes, when we look at the ocean, it's hard to imagine all of the amazing life. I think it's important to take time to learn more about what's right by us so we can take care of the world around us. I was delighted to learn about my dolphin neighbors right here in the northeast US!

I took this photo from the boat! (Click on the photo to initiate a mini gallery of 3 photos!)
